This past summer, the Ohio National Guard, the City of Bowling Green and Wood Lane dedicated the new National Guard and Community Training Center. This collaboration fulfilled Wood Lane's dream of building a state-of-the art gymnasium. The facility is located on the corners of Newton and W. Haskins Rd., Bowling Green, OH.
With the community center, persons served have a space to call their own to train and compete in Special Olympics sports, regularly host events and to schedule recreational activities throughout the year. The Center also allows individuals to interact with other community members.
The gymnasium is used daily by Special Olympics activities and events, habilitation services and recreation activities which include dances.

Dolores A. Black
Gym Dedication
August 24th, 2005 |
For over 40 years, Dolores A. Black has been a key volunteer to Wood Lane. Black was recognized for her forty years of volunteer service, as Wood Lane's new gym was dedicated earlier this year. "I started in a gym and it is such an honor to have this gymnasium named after me," stated Dolores Black.
In 1964, Dolores assisted with the children's physical education program. Dolores saw a need to assist other programs and begin a quality adapted physical education program. In 1966, the film "Show Me" was produced in cooperation with the late Bonnie Motter as well as WBGU. Students from our program participated in the filming. This film was the first of its kind and was distributed not only in the United States but also foreign countries.
Her research and publications since 1966 has been invaluable to teachers and professionals in adapted physical education, recreation and sport management.
She has volunteered to serve on many Boards at Wood Lane as well as at the state level. They have included the Wood County Board of MRDD, Wood Lane Residential Services, Wood County Special Olympics and the Ohio Association of County Boards of MRDD.
She helped create specialized courses for students including "Sport and Recreation for People With Different Disabilities as well as a one-of-a kind seminar for professionals with Special Olympics.
Dolores has given this program thousands of hours of service to encourage only the best in services. She also has had a significant impact on thousands of University students and their understanding about the abilities of all individuals. Each semester, students completed field experience with Wood Lane, Wood County Special Olympics or other organizations. Many of us remember the Saturday Morning Activity Clinic at BGSU and how it not only benefited University students, but also children and adults with disabilities. Individuals received individual recreational and social opportunities with University students. Her work at Wood Lane continues to enhance services for individuals and families
