The Dolores A. Black Gymnasium features a full-size gymnasium with seating for 300. It serves as the home site for Special Olympics basketball and volleyball programs. The gymnasium is also used for fitness programs and other special events. With the inclusion of the gymnasium at the Bowling Green National Guard Training and Community Center, persons served have a space to call their own to train and compete in Special Olympics sports as well as participate in recreational activities. The Center also allows individuals to interact with other community members who are a part of recreation programs at the Center.
The gym was dedicated on August 24, 2005 and named in honor of Dolores A. Black for her forty-plus years of volunteer service with Wood Lane. Since 1964, Dolores has been instrumental in the development of many programs in the physical education, recreation and Special Olympics fields. She and other faculty at Bowling Green State University started the first adapted physical education program for what was then known as the “Retarded Children’s School.” She has reached thousands of students as a professor at BGSU and through the Dolores A. Black Special Olympics Fund.
Community members, groups, and businesses can rent the facility for a nominal charge. A brochure is available below:
